SOVLED! Is AMD Ryzen 7 4700G good for gaming?

Ryzen CPUs are known for their amazing gaming performance with their integrated graphics. They can them APU or Radeon graphics. But, we are going to focus specifically on a single CPU in this article. Yes, we are going to take one of the best APUs which will allow you to play most of the PC games without buying a dedicated graphics card. This one is AMD Ryzen 7 4700G.

As you might be aware, the G series CPUs from Ryzen are actually APUs (or the CPUs with integrated graphics). I may call it a CPU or APU later in this article.

It is a Zen2 based Ryzen CPU with Radeon graphics inside it. It has 8 cores and 16 threads. It is one of the best CPUs you can ever get for gaming with integrated graphics. It is on the top in the Ryzen’s 4000 Renoir Desktop APU series.

So, you can definitely expect some good gaming performance. For example, if you want to play games like CS: GO, GTA-V, Minecraft, etc, you can easily achieve 60FPS at 720P. Most of the games will be playable on 1080P resolution at above 30 FPS. On higher resolutions than that such as 4K, you will definitely see issues. The main point here is that this CPU will make most of the games playable on your computer on lower resolutions. So, if you don’t want to buy a dedicated graphics card, this CPU is definitely a good pick for you.

Note: Please keep a thing in mind that the Ryzen 7 4700G is an OEM/Tray CPU. You will not get any box or accessories with this CPU. The availability can also be low as compared to the retail CPUs. But, it is going to be a cheaper option for you without compromising the performance.

So, as you can see, the Ryzen 7 4700G is an amazing CPU if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a dedicated graphics card. All these games are enough to make any normal CPU sweat out. But, you can see that our CPU managed to run all of them at enough FPS.

Who should buy Ryzen 7 4500G CPU for gaming?

If you are a casual gamer and want a PC that can just run any game, this is the CPU for you. If you are not very curious about those very-high FPS and high resolution, you are good to go with the Ryzen 7 4500G CPU.

Also, if you are a hobbyist and even an enthusiast gamer, you can still opt for this CPU until the prices of graphics cards are a little bit down. This CPU will be good to pair with high-end graphics cards like RTX 2080 Super. So, if you do not have a budget to afford a graphics card just now, you can choose the Ryzen 7 4500G and play your games without any hassles.

Another possibility is that you want to buy a pre-built PC and you are seeing this CPU in your build. So, it is well and good to pick this CPU if you want to do casual gaming. However, you should confirm from your manufacturer whether you will be able to upgrade to a dedicated GPU in the future or not.

Who should not buy Ryzen 7 4700G CPU?

Well, the first question is about the warranty. Since the Ryzen 7 4700G is an OEM-Only CPU, you will not find any AMD reseller or online platform selling this CPU directly as a retail CPU. However, you can find it on eBay or other websites. Mostly, you will see these CPUs getting sold as second-hand products. So, you won’t get any warranty most of the time. This is the first thing to keep in mind.

Also, if you want to build your PC on your own, you should try to get a retail CPU and not this one. If you are building a new PC and buying all the new products, you should not get a used CPU in any way. However, you can also find a new OEM CPU but mostly the warranty will be for one year.

So, you should not compromise with the warranty just to save 10 or 20 bucks. Again, if you are going to buy a pre-built PC from named companies like HP, Asus, Dell, you can definitely go for the Ryzen 7 4700G CPU.

Is there any harms of OEM CPUs?

If you are getting an OEM CPU as a single product, you might be falling into a trap. These CPUs are generally not available for sale by the companies. Simply do an online search and try to buy a Ryzen 7 4700G CPU. You will hardly find any online shopping platform selling this CPU. Basically, the OEM products are intended to be sold only to the big brands.

For example, if HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, or any other big company is going to develop a pre-built PC for its customers, it will grab these OEM CPUs from the brands such as Intel and AMD. Now, those big PC manufacturers will make a bundle of all the components and sell a complete desktop to the users. On the other hand, the retail CPUs are those which are available for normal users. The retail CPUs are made for custom PC builds.

However, if you buy a working OEM CPU, you can build your own custom PC using it as long as you are installing it with compatible hardware pieces.

What is Intel equivalent to the Ryzen 7 4700G?

Intel Core i7-10700 is the best competitor to the Ryzen 7 4700G. Both these CPUs have the same 8 cores and 16 threads. Also, the maximum frequency is almost similar i.e. (10700-4.8GHz, 4700X-4.4GHz).

So, we can say that both of them are great competitors. But, again, the Intel Core i7-10700 is a retail CPU and it is easy to buy online. However, the price difference is huge and this may change your decision.

Besides the similar configurations in both the CPUs, the Ryzen 7 4700G is generally available at around 80$ – 100$ lesser than the Core i7. Also, if we talk about gaming, the Radeon graphics in the Ryzen 7 are way better than the Intel UHD graphics in the i7. So, definitely, the AMD Ryzen 7 4700G is way better than its toughest competitor i.e. Intel i7 10700.

Is AMD Ryzen 7 4700G overclockable?

Yes, the Ryzen 7 4700G is an overclockable APU. However, you will have to upgrade the cooling system in order to achieve good results. Although, the TDP is very low in this APU the overclocking may result in very high temperatures. So, you may need to opt for a liquid AIO cooler in order to achieve the best overclocking results.

See this article to know more about its amazing overclocking results. You will see that the APU can reach almost 5.0 GHz frequency which is an impressive number for this kind of APU.

Conclusion

In my opinion, the Ryzen 7 4700G is a good gaming APU for beginners. You can run almost all the PC games on low resolution and achieve above 30 FPS. However, it will be good if you buy a pre-build PC having this CPU on the mobo. It is an OEM CPU and unless you are buying it from an authorized seller, you might be falling into the trap. Performance-wise, this is definitely a good CPU at a pretty competitive price for gaming.

Also, it suits well with the top-end graphics cards such as RTX 2080, 2080 Super, or RTX 3060 as well. So, you don’t have to worry about the upgrade options in the future.
